Last winter’s La Niña faded to neutral conditions, and El Niño returned during the summer. Warmer and drier conditions are expected in the High Plains, along with below-normal snowfall. Expect colder temperatures in the Ohio Valley, with a wetter eastern area and a number of snowy periods throughout the season. Winter will be tough in the Appalachians, with colder and snowier conditions, especially in the north.
An Aggadic legend found in tractate Avodah Zarah 8a puts forth the talmudic hypothesis that Adam first established the tradition of fasting before the winter solstice, and rejoicing afterward, which festival later developed into the Roman Saturnalia and Kalendae. In this night all the family gather together, usually at the house of the eldest, and celebrate it by eating, drinking and reciting poetry (esp. Hafez). Yalda night celebration, or as some call it “Shabe Chelleh” (“the 40th night”), is one of the oldest Iranian traditions that has been present in Persian culture from ancient times. Iranian people celebrate the night of the Northern Hemisphere’s winter solstice as, “Yalda night”, which is known to be the “longest and darkest night of the year”.
In the winter season the sun it not active, as usual, temperatures are low and days are really cold. Seasonal lag means that the coldest period normally follows the solstice by a few weeks. Diamond dust, also known as ice needles or ice crystals, forms at temperatures approaching −40 °C (−40 °F) due to air with slightly higher moisture from above mixing with colder, surface-based air.

Neolithic Europe

This led some scholars to mystake casino believe that Scandinavian Yule (Jól) originally was a sun festival on the winter solstice. The Heimskringla, written in the 13th century by the Icelander Snorri Sturluson, describes a Jól feast hosted by the Norwegian king Haakon the Good (c. 920–961). Philipp E. Nothaft, a professor at Trinity College Dublin, though this “is nowadays used as the default explanation for the choice of 25 December as Christ’s birthday, few advocates of this theory seem to be aware of how paltry the available evidence actually is”. A widely-held theory is that the Church chose it as Christ’s birthday (Dies Natalis Christi) specifically to appropriate the Roman festival of the sun god’s birthday (Dies Natalis Solis Invicti). In AD 274, the emperor Aurelian made this the date of the festival Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, the birthday of Sol Invictus or the ‘Invincible Sun’. In the same century, Ovid wrote in the Fasti that the winter solstice is the first day of the “new Sun”.

It occurs after autumn and before spring, when the hemisphere is oriented away from the Sun as a result of the tilt of Earth’s axis.

For 235 years, The Old Farmer’s Almanac has mixed practical advice with the unexpected.

But coming of the winter season does not mean that we will not enjoy the beauty of the nature.

Humans are sensitive to winter cold, which compromises the body’s ability to maintain both core and surface heat of the body.

The winter solstice, or hibernal solstice, occurs when either of Earth’s poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the Sun.

List of winter solstice festivals and observances

Expect a mild winter in the Desert Southwest, with warmer and drier conditions, including in areas that usually receive snow.

For that hemisphere, the winter solstice is the day with the shortest period of daylight and longest night of the year, and when the Sun is at its lowest arc in the sky.

Seasonal lag means that the coldest period normally follows the solstice by a few weeks.

In the Southern Hemisphere, the more maritime climate and the relative lack of land south of 40°S make the winters milder; thus, snow and ice are less common in inhabited regions of the Southern Hemisphere.

Nature in the winter season is sleeping, because of low temperatures, frost in the air and snowing weather.

In Gaelic Ireland and Scotland, winter began with the festival of Samhain on 1 November and ended with Imbolc on 1 February. For many mainland European countries, especially Germanic regions, winter began at Martinmas (Saint Martin’s Day) on 11 November. Bede also mentions an older ‘two-season’ year, where summer ended and winter began at the full moon during the month of Winterfylleth, in October. Likewise, in Christian Anglo-Saxon calendars, winter began on 7 November, its midpoint was the solstice or Midwinter on 25 December, and winter ended on 6 February. In the Julian calendar used in the ancient Roman world, winter began on 10 November, its midpoint was the winter solstice on 25 December, and winter ended on 6 February. This idea survived in parts of Europe into the Early Middle Ages, co-existing with the newer idea of four seasons.

Appalachians

The coldest moth of the winter in this hemisphere is January. Another just grow more warm fur, that would help them to live when the weather is cold and also well-known way to survive winter season is fall into hibernation. Also winter season is the best time in the year to see starts in t night sky, due to they are the brightest in this time of the year. Most of plants and animals are having their hibernation period, so winter is not full of bright colors, but who says that white, snowy and a bit magical winter is not cool? Nature in the winter season is sleeping, because of low temperatures, frost in the air and snowing weather. Everyone feels some magic in the air, because of frosts, crystal nights, snow and just this amazing atmosphere.

The opposite event is the summer solstice, which happens at the same time in the opposite hemisphere. The winter solstice, or hibernal solstice, occurs when either of Earth’s poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the Sun. There is no snowing in many regions during winter.

Exceptionally cold

See The Old Farmer’s Almanac Winter Forecast for temperatures, snowfall, and the snowiest periods across the United States. When he saw the winter solstice, and he saw that the day was continuously lengthening, he said, “It is the order of the world!” He went and feasted for eight days. When the First Man saw that the day was continuously shortening, he said, “Woe is me! Because I have sinned, the world darkens around me, and returns to formlessless and void. This is the death to which Heaven has sentenced me!” He decided to spend eight days in fasting and prayer.
The day at the winter solstice is the shortest of the year and the night is the longest. In the Southern Hemisphere, it is the summer solstice, the day with the longest daylight hours. Temperatures are low and it is cold for some of them to stay outside, it is difficult to find food and shelter. But coming of the winter season does not mean that we will not enjoy the beauty of the nature.
In his Panarion, also from the fourth century, Epiphanius of Salamis wrote that the winter solstice was celebrated on 25 December in Alexandria as the Kikellia. Macrobius wrote in the fourth century that the Sun appears small at the winter solstice, and on this shortest day, the Egyptians brought an idol of a child Sun god out of a shrine. Plutarch wrote in the Moralia (first century AD) that the Egyptians believed the goddess Isis gave birth to Harpocrates (Horus the Child) at the winter solstice. Since prehistory, the winter solstice has been a significant time of year in many cultures and has been marked by festivals and rites.
